Kaleigh McAfee, AMFT
"I will not rescue you for you are not powerless. I will not fix you for you are not broken. I will not heal you for I see you in your wholeness. I will walk with you through your darkness as you remember your light." - A Medicine Woman's Prayer
"It may be that when we no longer know what to do we have come to our real work, and that when we no longer know which way to go we have come to our real journey. The mind that is not baffled is not employed. The impeded stream is the one that sings." - Wendell Berry
If you’re ready for change, I’m ready to be with you through it. I may be the right fit if you believe your coping skills are only getting you so far, find that therapy didn’t “hit the spot" in the past, or you’ve previously had success with traditional talk therapy but would like to dive deeper into your inner world. My energy is best-suited for folks who are interested in, open to, or curious about longer-term (6 mo +) work and are really ready for life to look, feel, and be different.
I'm an Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapist and use IFS as my primary treatment modality; however, I encourage your parts to express themselves in ways that feel most authentic, and I love to therapeutically incorporate the things that make you you - music, art, reading and writing, a relationship with nature, spiritual practices, etc. I am also a registered yoga teacher and Reiki practitioner, as well as an iRest yoga nidra meditation teacher; I can use these tools collaboratively for self-exploration and/or regulation during and between sessions. This healing work is yours, and we'll collaborate to ensure the journey feels authentic.
You can expect sessions with me to be deeply connected, intuitive, and insightful - the relationships I build with my clients have the essence of anam cara, the Celtic concept of "soul friend." At the same time, sessions with me are full of laughter, fervor, and encouragement (let me be clear - I LOVE to laugh). I have a non-directive approach to therapy, meaning I'll keep us moving (safely) down the river towards your goals without exerting influence over the river's natural flow. To keep that river flowing, I do often create exploratory “homework assignments” custom to you to encourage self-reflection and integration between sessions, as most of the “work” happens beyond the hour we spend together.
Last - and most importantly – I deeply believe in this work. The author Matt Kahn shares, “people can only meet you, as deeply as they’ve met themselves.” I have worked with my own IFS-certified therapist for 4 years and have experienced transformation through other various healing modalities. I have met myself deeply, and I feel strongly about my ability to hold safe space for you to do the same.
A note to servicemembers: I encourage active duty personnel and veterans to come experience growth without militant sternness. As a former military spouse and a veteran myself, I understand the stigma and narrative around "healing" and mental health. The parts of you that are ready for things to stop being so painful and difficult + the parts of you with conflicting beliefs about therapy are all welcome.
A little about me: I’ve lived a lot of lives before becoming a therapist - I have an undergraduate degree in Management of Aging Services, served in the U.S. Army for 6 years, and have since supported folks in various professional roles as a crisis counselor, sexual assault case manager, funeral director, and home funeral educator. My life's motto is "let's see about it" and I love novelty and trying new things. I also ensure I regularly get out of my comfort zone and seek healthy doses of Type-II fun. I read like it's going out of style (especially horror and psychological thrillers). I feel most creative doing pottery and I feel most at ease in natural bodies of water. I'm an INFJ, Virgo Sun, Cancer Rising, and Pisces Moon, and I'm on my spiritual path. I read oracle and I'm training in animal communication.
